  just though i'd start a thread devoted to languages, dialects/sociolects and accents, with the idea being that posters can comment on any language, or dialect or accent of any language, on this thread.. any phrases, expressions or idioms that you find interesting are also welcome.

  first, the subject of english accents came up on another thread.. the british isles have many different types of accent (although many of the dialects may be dying out), and if i start to take a closer look, i can't help but see 'patterns' .... in received pronunciation of standard english, the letter r is pronounced initially, between vowels, and after consonants, e.g.

  red, arrow, break.

  i am surprised no one has mentioned what is going on in canada.. maybe they have but i missed it.

  so here are some of the facts as i know them.

  ontario only.. sault st. marie had their six congregations whittled down to two.

  Good old information control. Listen obey and be blessed. What is that 40 minute drive in less than ideal weather? Not to mention a lot of older ones dont see well at night.

  We used to see BOE broken up to mitigate cliques, now it may be for breaking up thinkers.

  The names that dont fit territory are always a puzzle; along with canning " pretty" names. Like changing rosedale to mechanicsville

  Drug-Sniffing Dogs Getting Retired at Airports

  i found this interesting in the news that dogs used to sniff for drugs at airports are being significantly cut back here in the us due to the increased legality of marijuana at the state level (though technically still illegal at the federal level) and passengers arriving from canada.

  a large number of the dogs are being put into early retirement.. i learned that dogs can be trained to sniff for drugs but once they "learn" a smell, they cannot unlearn it.

  basically, there is no difference to them between marijuana or cocaine or meth.

  I had to submit to a drugs test yesterday.

  i had to submit to a random work place drugs test yesterday, of which i passed.

  in this country smoking marijuana / methamphetamine is illegal.

  the thing that really struck me was that despite the illegal nature of it, was just how prevalent and problem is.

  States have limits but they are based on hunches instead of science. THC traces stay longer than alcohol. The usual driving habit seems to be going 20 under the speed limit, the slowed reaction time is a worry

  The legalization didnt change the market much. It is not like there were not smokers already. The greedy tax keeps the black market going.

  You dont have to test for meth, just watch the teeth

  a jp video came up on my youtube feed last week - he was on a panel in front of a huge audience and some poor disturbed guy ran on stage and started crying and wailing to peterson that he needed his help.

  it was agonising to watch.. what was even more disturbing was the comments section.

  i do not exaggerate when i say that dozens of people were extolling peterson's wisdom as if jesus had come again.
